Pretoria: The MidCity Property Group launched the construction of the new MidCity Corner / EduCourt buildings in Sunnyside with a small earth turning ceremony. The mixed use development will comprise of both commercial and residential quarters and is located across the road from the MidCity Square building in Sunnyside East.

“This development is another stepping stone in our ultimate goal to uplift Sunnyside and surrounding neighbourhoods. We are in the centre of the new regional core as per the City of Tshwane’s Urban Development Program and lie on the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. We are positive to see our goals and that of the city align.” said David de Villiers, MidCity Property Group’s Development Manager.

David Hewer, Managing Director added: “We are exceptionally proud of this new development and hope that it will become a landmark in the east of Pretoria. Not only will this development house our new corporate head offices, but it will provide housing for nearly 200 students. In the spirit of the academically focused area in which we trade, we are happy to get involved. It is of huge importance to us to do whatever we can to help uplift our community by providing them with a sustainable and reliable product offering.”

The commercial building, MidCity Corner, will provide 2000m² gross rentable area of top graded office space.  The architectural style is the timeless Cape Dutch style which ties in with the MidCity Square building across the road.  “The location of this building is ideal for MidCity and falls in line with the business model we follow.” said Dawie de Villiers, Executive Chairman of the MidCity Property Group.

The two residential buildings, called EduCourt, will provide pristine accommodation for tertiary students.  The accommodation consists of 66 three bedroom suites, which will provide over 198 beds in total.  EduCourt lies on the Academic Corridor between the University of Pretoria and Unisa and with the implementation of the BRT bus line, students will have easy access to all top educational institutions in the city.

One block of the EduCourt Building, has been specifically allocated to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme of South Africa (NSFAS) students. These previously disadvantaged students receive financial aid through the Department of Higher Education.  David Hewer said: “We strive to give back to the community by providing these students with affordable housing that falls in line with their aid allowances. We aim to provide them with a comfortable environment to make the most of their studies and student years.”

“We believe in investing in their future through this project.” added David de Villiers.  The MidCity Property Group expects this project to be completed by the end of December 2013.
